True Blue Home Inspections
ASHI Certified Home Inspector Serving Chicago, Illinois
The city of Chicago was founded by Jean Baptiste Point du Sable at his homestead on the Chicago River. This is found near the later developed settlement surrounding Fort Dearborn (near the corner of present-day Michigan Ave. and the River).
As the settlement grew, it became incorporated as a town in 1833, and then as a city in 1837. It now encompasses nearly 234 square miles and holds a population of 2.7 million people. It is one of the largest cities in the United States.
Several square miles of the wooden city was destroyed during the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. However, this prompted a rapid rebuilding of the city with stone and brick and many new building codes and other requirements implemented. From this expansion, the city has become a hub of finance, culture, commerce, industry, education, technology, and transportation. Its relatively central location in the country has made it a central hub for railroads and the largest collection of federal highways in the system.
It has become the home to the Chicago Board of Trade which conducts nearly 20% of the futures market. It also holds O’Hare International Airport which is one of the six busiest airfields in the world.
With a Gross Domestic Product of nearly $700 billion, it has become a diverse economy with no single industry commanding more than 14% of the population. It is headquarters to many of the top 500 corporations in the world: Allstate Insurance, Archer Daniels Midland, Boing, Caterpillar, Conagra Brands, Motorola, Sears, United Airlines, US Foods, and Walgreens.
It has become a popular tourist destination with many wonderful institutions and sites, such as Millennium Park, Navy Pier, Magnificent Mile, The Art Institute of Chicago, Museum Campus, The Field Museum, Willis Tower, Grant Park, The Museum of Science and Industry, and Lincoln Park Zoo.
It is home to many of the best universities in the nation: University of Chicago, Northwestern University, University of Illinois-Circle, as well as many smaller colleges and universities of note.
It has several professional sports teams such as the Chicago Bears, the Bulls, the Cubs, White Sox, and the Blackhawks.
