Des Plaines is a large community – nearly fourteen square miles -- to the northwest of Chicago. It was named after the Des Plaines River that runs through the eastern quarter of the town. It is a major transportation hub for that part of the region with two major interstate highways, #90 and #294; three U.S. highways, #12, #14, and #45; and three Illinois highways, #58, #72, and #83 running through it. It has a population of 58,000 which support a thriving commercial district in its downtown area and many commercial boulevards. I have shopped there often myself at their many wonderful stores and restaurants. The major employers are Universal Oil and Rivers Casino. It is home to Oakton Community College as well as school districts, #59, #62, and #63. The medium home value is $250,000 which is mostly single-family homes with a mix of low-rise condominiums. Some high-rise condos have been built in the downtown district.
